Genesis 1:15
“And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.”
KJV
Read in Genesis 1Meaning
The lights are created for service within the world, including giving light on earth. Their role is functional and subordinate within God's creation.
Read carefully
The verse does not invite worship of the lights or assign them independent spiritual authority. They perform the task appointed to them in the narrative.
Reflection
Created power is portrayed as purposeful rather than ultimate. Even the lights that structure human days serve within an order larger than themselves.
