The Lord Will

Genesis 1:19

β€œAnd the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”

KJV

Read in Genesis 1

Meaning

The fourth day reaches its formal conclusion after the heavenly lights have been assigned their places and functions.

Read carefully

As elsewhere in Genesis 1, the formula is part of the chapter's literary architecture as well as its temporal language. Both dimensions matter for interpretation.

Reflection

The repeated close of each day gives the account a disciplined pace. Order includes not only space and creatures but also sequence and completion.
