Genesis 1:2
βAnd the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.β
KJV
Read in Genesis 1Meaning
Genesis 1:2 establishes the problem the creation sequence will address: the earth is not yet arranged or populated, yet God's Spirit is already present over the waters.
Read carefully
The description of darkness and the deep should not automatically be treated as moral evil. In this verse they characterize the unformed scene that God's subsequent ordering work will shape.
Reflection
The narrative presents divine presence before visible order is complete. Disorder in the scene is not portrayed as a region beyond God's reach or awareness.
