The Lord Will

Genesis 11:31

“And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.”

KJV

Read in Genesis 11

Meaning

Terah leads part of his household out of Ur with Canaan as the destination, but they reach Haran and remain there.

Read carefully

Genesis 11 attributes this migration initiative to Terah; Genesis 12 will then narrate God's direct call to Abram from the setting in Haran.

Reflection

The family is already on a journey toward Canaan, but the decisive theological meaning of Abram's journey will come with God's call and promise.
