The promise of a great name should be read with Genesis 11 in view: unlike Babel, Abram does not construct his own greatness; the initiative and purpose belong to God.

Biblical blessing is not merely private advantage. Genesis 12 ties Abram's reception of blessing to a calling that extends beyond himself.
