The Lord Will

Genesis 21:14

“And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer–sheba.”

Read in Genesis 21

Meaning

The verse depicts expulsion into a precarious environment, making Hagar's vulnerability and the danger to Ishmael central to the scene.

Read carefully

The narrative should not be romanticized into approval of abandoning dependents or used to minimize the hardship imposed on Hagar and Ishmael.

Reflection

Texts about providence can still name human vulnerability honestly; divine care does not make the danger or suffering unreal.
