The opening verse does more than list three forbidden activities. Its movement from walking to standing to sitting creates an intensifying literary picture, while counsel, way, and seat evoke increasingly settled forms of participation. The person is called blessed not because he has never met sinners, but because he does not permit their outlook to become his governing pattern. Within verses 1–3, this refusal creates space for the positive delight of verse 2 and the rooted fruitfulness of verse 3. Verse 1 therefore cannot stand alone as mere avoidance; it is the first half of a contrast between corrupt formation and formation by the LORD’s instruction.

Read carefully
The verse rejects being governed by ungodly counsel, sinful practice, and scorn. It does not cancel love of neighbor, mercy, witness, or ordinary human relationship.

Name the formative influence, reduce its authority over your attention, and replace it with counsel and community that train truthful judgment.
