The Lord Will

Psalm 59:11

Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.

KJV

Read in Psalm 59

Meaning

This is a striking variation inside an imprecatory psalm: judgment has a public, pedagogical dimension. The prayer still addresses God, not human agents commissioned to inflict suffering.

Judgment on destructive speech and predation

The psalm asks that arrogant violence be exposed, restrained, and brought low so that God’s rule becomes known, while the enemies’ restless prowling is repeated once more.

Read carefully

The prayer entrusts judgment to God and cannot be converted into permission for persecution or expulsion of modern groups.

Reflection

Value transparent, proportionate processes that protect others and help communities learn from wrongdoing.
