John the Baptist
John the Baptist was the prophetic forerunner who prepared Israel for the public ministry of Jesus. Born to Zechariah and Elizabeth, he preached repentance, baptized in the Jordan, and announced the coming of one greater than himself. He baptized Jesus and later identified him to his own disciples. John's confrontation of Herod Antipas over an unlawful marriage led to his imprisonment and execution. The Gospels distinguish him clearly from John the apostle.
