Capernaum
Capernaum, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, became one of the principal settings of Jesus' ministry. The Gospels place teaching, healings, the calling of disciples and repeated encounters with crowds there. Jesus also rebuked the town for failing to respond adequately to the works done in its midst.
Biblical and historical context
Its position beside the lake and along regional routes made Capernaum a practical base for movement around Galilee. Archaeology confirms a substantial settlement in the Roman period. For biblical study, its importance lies less in later pilgrimage traditions than in how often the Gospel narratives return to the town as a setting for Jesus' words and actions.
