Damascus
Damascus is an ancient Syrian city appearing in both Testaments. It stands within the political world of Aram in Old Testament narratives and prophetic oracles. In Acts it becomes especially important because Saul travelled there to arrest followers of Jesus, encountered the risen Christ on the way, and entered the city where Ananias was sent to him.
Biblical and historical context
Damascus lies at an oasis east of the Anti-Lebanon mountains and has been inhabited for millennia. Biblical references span very different periods, from patriarchal geography and conflicts involving Aram-Damascus to the first-century setting of Paul's conversion and early preaching. The city therefore connects Old Testament regional history with a decisive New Testament missionary turning point.
