Nazareth
Nazareth is the Galilean town associated with Jesus' upbringing and early public ministry. Luke places Gabriel's announcement to Mary there, and the Gospels repeatedly identify Jesus as being from Nazareth. Jesus later taught in the synagogue of his hometown, where his message met resistance.
Biblical and historical context
In the first century Nazareth was a small Jewish settlement in the hill country of Galilee rather than a major political or commercial center. Its biblical importance comes from the contrast between its obscurity and the significance of Jesus, as reflected in Nathanael's question about whether anything good could come from Nazareth.
