Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Galilee is the freshwater lake around which much of Jesus' Galilean ministry unfolds. The Gospels connect it with fishing disciples, crossings by boat, storms, teaching crowds and signs performed on or near the water. Towns such as Capernaum stood along its shores.
Biblical and historical context
The lake is also known in Scripture by names including the Sea of Chinnereth or Chinneroth and the Lake of Gennesaret, depending on period and text. Its geography helps readers understand the short distances between many Gospel settings and the importance of fishing and boat travel in the region.
