The Lord Will

Genesis 2:19

β€œAnd out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.”

KJV

Read in Genesis 2

Meaning

The man exercises a naming role toward the animals, but the scene also functions narratively as a search that will clarify the uniqueness of human partnership.

Read carefully

The verse is not best reduced to a zoological catalog or a claim that God lacked knowledge of the outcome. Within the story, the process prepares the man's recognition in verse 23.

Reflection

Naming expresses attention to difference. Human responsibility toward creation begins with recognizing creatures rather than treating them as an undifferentiated mass.
