Genesis 2:20
βAnd Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.β
KJV
Read in Genesis 2Meaning
The animals do not provide the corresponding human partnership the story is seeking. The unresolved need remains specifically interpersonal and human.
Read carefully
This does not demean animals or deny their value elsewhere in Genesis. The point is about correspondence for the man, not the worthlessness of other creatures.
Reflection
Not every form of company answers every form of loneliness. The text names a distinctively human need for reciprocal relationship.
