Cherubim in Scripture are throne and sanctuary beings, not the sentimental childlike figures of later art. Their presence here marks the boundary as sacred and divinely enforced.
Reflection
Genesis 3 closes with a barrier humanity cannot remove for itself. Later biblical hope is therefore about God's provision of a way forward, not human return to innocence by willpower.
