Genesis 3:23
βTherefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.β
KJV
Read in Genesis 3Meaning
Expulsion changes where human life and work will unfold. The task of cultivating remains, but Eden is no longer the setting in which that vocation is carried out.
Read carefully
The verse should not be read as though human work outside Eden has no value. Genesis preserves vocation while emphasizing that its original environment of unbroken fellowship has been lost.
Reflection
Consequences can alter the conditions of a calling without erasing every element of the calling itself. Human responsibility continues east of Eden.
