The tree image explains the result of verses 1–2. Stability and fruit are not self-generated; the tree is planted beside rivers of water. Its fruit comes “in his season,” which shows that patient timing belongs to the image. The leaf that does not wither signals durable life, not exemption from heat or difficulty. The closing phrase, “whatsoever he doeth shall prosper,” must be governed by the whole image and by the Psalter’s many righteous sufferers. It describes the enduring fruitfulness and ultimate soundness of a life rooted in God’s way, not a guarantee that every plan will produce wealth, comfort, or immediate success.
The rooted way of the righteous
The opening movement describes the formation, delight, and rooted fruitfulness of the blessed person.
Read carefully
The image promises rooted, seasonal, God-approved fruitfulness. It does not erase suffering, failure, delay, or the need to test whether an undertaking belongs to the righteous way.
Reflection
Keep tending the sources, practices, and relationships that root you in God’s instruction, and evaluate growth over seasons rather than days.
