“The ungodly are not so” denies every feature of verse 3: no planted stability, dependable supply, seasonal fruit, or enduring leaf. Chaff is the light husk separated from grain during winnowing. It may be present on the threshing floor, but it has no lasting weight and cannot resist the wind. The metaphor prepares for judgment in verse 5. Its point is not that wicked people never appear successful; it is that a life opposed to God lacks the permanence that judgment will reveal.

The metaphor evaluates the permanence of a way of life before God. It does not revoke the human dignity of those who follow that way.
