The Lord Will

Genesis 3:22

β€œAnd the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:”

KJV

Read in Genesis 3

Meaning

The verse combines acquired moral knowledge with a new prohibition concerning the tree of life. The humans' changed condition makes unending life in that condition something from which they are barred.

Read carefully

The phrase 'like one of us' has been read in several ways, including divine-council and Trinitarian interpretations. The verse itself does not settle every later theological explanation of the plural.

Reflection

Getting what temptation promised can still reveal that the promise was deeply misleading. The humans gain knowledge but lose the life-context in which they had lived with God in Eden.
